A street in Soham suffers with such poor internet connection that it has been voted among the worst in the UK.

The average download speed over the last six months in Great Fen Road was measured at just 0.547Mbps – the second slowest in the UK behind Williamson Road, in Romney Marsh, Kent.

The test was carried out by consumer website uSwitch.com which said that Great Fen Road was almost 135 times slower than the country’s top performing street Sandy Lane, in Cannock, Staffordshire, which enjoys speeds of 72.86Mbps.

The Soham street was also 42 times slower than the UK average speed over the same six-month period.

Web users in Great Fen Road would need about 19 hours to download a two-hour HD film, about 2.5 hours to download a 45-minute HD TV show and almost 49 minutes to download a 20-song music album.

By contrast, in Sandy Lane, it would take eight minutes to download a two-hour HD film, one minute to download a 45-minute HD TV show, and 22 seconds to download a 20-song music album.

Ewan Taylor-Gibson, of uSwitch.com, said: “Superfast broadband is now available to more than three quarters of the UK, but nearly a third (31%) don’t realise they can get it.

“We looked at which of the 30 slowest streets had superfast availability and, interestingly, 37 per cent of them do, but residents have obviously chosen not to take up superfast services.”

According to Connecting Cambridgeshire, superfast broadband has been available to homes in Great Fen Road since September.
