COLOURFUL modern art lined the walls of Ely Cathedral's ancient Lady Chapel on Saturday when old met new at a unique auction.

But, although the event fired the enthusiasm of dealers and buyers before the auction, rain and wind deterred many people on the day.

Since the sale, however, the organiser, Blyth and Co of Ely's Market Place, has sold a number of pieces and heralded the event a success.

Auctioneer, David Palmer, brought a variety of unusual lots under the hammer, selling a teapot carrying a picture of Marilyn Monroe, for over £100 and a modern nude sculpture for almost £50.

A proportion of the money raised from the event will boost funds for the Wildlife Trust's Great Fen Project.

David, who has appeared on the successful TV shows Bargain Hunt and Flog It! said: "Everybody said it was a good idea to hold the auction in the Lady Chapel and using the old building generated specific interest. It was certainly a humbling experience to stand in that chapel.

"It has certainly show the church has an open door and people can use it and it proved that it is part of the community whether you are religious or not.

"Many people think you have to be mega rich or posh to go to an art sale and I think the auction proved this is not the case.
