A shopper who feared he had lost his wallet in Ely city centre was so relieved to get it back he donated its entire contents to the East Anglia Children's Hospice Appeal.

The man, who didn't leave his name, gave at least £15 to members of the Isle of Ely Lions Club who were

collecting for the Milton Hospice outside Waitrose.

Collector Ethel Smith said: "This man came up to me and said he was so relieved to discover he hadn't lost his wallet that we could everything that was in it. I was so surprised."

Generous shoppers gave the 12 collectors more than £632 for the charity which will be added to £230 raised from Breakfast with Father Christmas at the city's Almonry and cash raised from the Two Counties Motor Show in Newmarket.

Club secretary Bob Smith thanked Waitrose for allowing the use of its forecourt for the collection.
