HADDENHAM councillor Gareth Wilson has been elected as the new leader of the Liberal Democrat group on East Cambridgeshire District Council.

He succeeds Simon Higginson, who represents Ely North and who has been leader for the last two years.

Active in politics since joining the Young Liberals and before moving to this part of the world seven years ago, Gareth was formerly a councillor for the London Borough of Redbridge. He has also stood for Parliament.

A chartered accountant, Gareth currently works for Cambridgeshire County Council mainly concerning the area of social services, in particular adults, older people and vulnerable children.

Gareth is married to Pauline, who is also a district councillor for the Haddenham Ward. He is a parish councillor and treasurer of the Haddenham Baptist Church and the Arkenstall Centre Charity.

In his spare time, Gareth likes to go sequence dancing with his wife.
