A Waterbeach woman will swim 22 miles – the equivalent of the English Channel – to raise funds for Diabetes UK.

Ali Fish, 42, is taking part in Swim22 – a challenge which gives swimmers three months to swim 22 miles in their local pool, either by themselves or by splitting the distance with teammates.

She is taking part to raise awareness of the condition and boost funds for the charity, because three generations of her family, including her eight-year-old niece and a friend’s 13-year-old son are affected by type 1 diabetes.

Having taken part in the challenge for the first time last year and thoroughly enjoyed it, the swimming teacher for Seals Swimming Ltd in Cambridge said: “I wanted to use the challenge to get back into swimming regularly again, taking part in the sport I love while helping to support the people I love.

“I completed the swim in 2015 in 14 swims over six weeks, raised over £1,000 and have continued to swim regularly since.

“This year, I would like to challenge myself further and complete the 22 miles in 22 days,” she added.

“My goal is not only to raise money for Diabetes UK but also to raise awareness of the life-changing conditions and the differences of type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

“I am so proud of my little niece Freya and my friend’s son Thomas for coping so well with their condition every day, especially the challenges that face them while at school and with their friends. They never let anything stand in their way.”

The challenge takes place between 22 February and 22 May.

Teresa Strange, Diabetes UK eastern fundraiser, said: “We are delighted that Ali will be diving into the pool and making a splash.

“We hope Ali’s commitment will inspire others in Cambridgeshire to take the plunge,” she added.

“The three-month timeframe means that whatever your fitness level there’s plenty of time to get in the pool.”
