ELECTORS in Ely's south and west division will go to the polls on January 19, for a by-election to elect a new county councillor for the area.

Four candidates will be contesting the election: Andrew Allen, representing the Green Party, Liberal Democrat Simon Higginson, Andrew Mair (known as Roderick), standing for the Conservative Party, and Labour candidate Fiona Ross.

The vote is being held after Liberal Democrat councillor Linda Crossley announced she was standing down earlier this month due to increasing commitments in her work as a teacher.

Electors can vote in person at a number of polling stations, at the Methodist Church in Chapel Street or at a Portacabin next to St Johns Road Scout Hut. The polling stations will be open from 8am till 9pm. Alternatively, voters can use postal votes or a proxy to vote for them. Applications for new postal or proxy votes must be made by 5pm on January 11.

INFO: for details about obtaining postal or proxy votes, contact Electoral Services on 01353 616214 or 616338.
