HARD-WORKING East Cambridgeshire volunteers have been rewarded with countywide accolades.

The Barns Young People's Forum, set up to help youngsters living on a troubled Ely estate, and the Downham Parish Conservation Group, have been judged winners in the Cambridgeshire Community Life Awards.

The forum won the Children and Young People category for its work with youngsters on the Barns estate and conservationists received the Environment and Community category award for their work on their 6.8-hectare reserve in Little Downham.

Ely's Prince Albert pub was runner-up in the Community Pub category.

The awards, hosted by Littleport-based Cambridgeshire ACRE, were presented by Burwell county and district councillor, Hazel Williams.

The forum provides sport, art and recreational activities during school holidays for children aged between four and 17.

The Downham Parish Conservation Group manages and runs the village's nature reserve, which includes meadow, spinney and dipping pond and has developed an apple orchard to bring back native tree species to Cambridgeshire.
