The construction firm tasked with building the £36 million Ely Southern bypass is inviting members of the public for a behind-the-scenes look at how the traffic-busting road will be made.
VolkerFitzpatrick is to host free tours of the building site, which was officially opened last week, on March 28.
The tour aims to give visitors an insight into what works will take place, as well as the day-to-day events at a construction site.
Ben Joyce, project manager at VolkerFitzpatrick civils divison, said: “This is a great opportunity to witness the start of what promises to be a technically and logistically inspiring civil engineering project.
“Visiting Ely during the Open Doors event will give anyone considering a career in civil engineering or construction a chance to see what is involved when working in the industry and how rewarding it can be.”
Councillor Ian Bates, chair of the economy and environment committee for Cambridgeshire County Council said: “Cambridgeshire County Council is delighted to support this event and to encourage the local community and especially local schools and colleges to get a ‘behind the scenes’ look at this exciting construction project.
“We also welcome the opportunity to encourage more people into the field of civil engineering and construction, and have outlined our commitment to this by ensuring that a number of apprenticeships were made available as part of the Ely Southern Bypass scheme.”
The new road, which is expected to be completed by spring 2018, aims to reduce journey times for drivers between the A10 and Stuntney Causeway by up to 56 per cent, and delays around the city’s rail station by 50 per cent.
Booking for the tours is essential. To book, visit www.opendoors.construction/site/451.
