“We have the opportunity to show so many people how we manage sustainable food production while working alongside all the wildlife that lives in these habitats.”

WHY not visit one of the UK’s largest celery farms on Sunday and discover the secrets behind how it is run.

Hainey Farm in Barway will open its doors to the public as part of the Open Farm Sunday project, which includes Fenrose Farm in Isleham (see Page 29). The farm has been owned and run by the Shropshire family for three generations and on Sunday they will open up the farm to the public from 10am till 3pm, inviting visitors to see how 200 hectares of celery is grown in the Cambridgeshire Fens.

“Open Farm Sunday is such an important day for us,” said Lyndsey Rolfe, environmental manager and co-ordinator of Open Farm Sunday at Hainey Farm.

“We have the opportunity to show so many people how we manage sustainable food production while working alongside all the wildlife that lives in these habitats.”

Farm managers and colleagues will join Lyndsey on Sunday, which this year promises to be even better than in previous years.

Attractions this year include the Hainey Farm tractor and trailer tour and the Stretham celery fields tour and a large machinery display.

After all that activity there will also be the chance to take a seat and enjoy a cup of tea and some home-made cake.

Youngsters can enjoy tractor racing, face painting, fairground rides and an insect corner and there will be raffle and the opportunity to stock up on provisions at the farm shop and mini farmers’ market.

INFO: free entry and car parking. Hainey Farm is in Barway (just off the A142 between Soham and Stuntney).

Check out next week’s Ely Standard as we will be publishing photographs of the event.
