VISITORS to Ely on Saturday were able to go back in time and experience life in the 17th Century. Re-enactments of battles and more genteel activities, including music and dancing, took place on Palace Green and outside Oliver Cromwell House as part of the city's Living History Day.
Tracey Harding, tourism team leader at East Cambs District Council, said: "Living History Day is always a spectacular event in our calendar at Oliver Cromwell House. The 17th Century was a dramatic time for this country, and Ely, especially with the influence of Oliver Cromwell which was felt strongly across the Fens. What we find in these re-enactment events is that it is the little things that people find fascinating about the past, for example, the ingredients and spices used in cookery or the general chores which people did back then.
