A HUGE blaze at a tyre-yard in Littleport has continued into its fourth day after being left to burn by firecrews.

Up to ten firecrews who attended the incident made the decision late on Friday to allow the tyres to burn due to the built up nature of the material, making it impossible to tackle successfuly.

A toxicology team from Oxfordshire also visited the scene over the weekend but several tests carried out by the scientists determiend that the smoke didnt pose an immediate threat to residents.

Witnesses as far away as Kings Lynn have reported being able to see the choking black smoke caused after more than 200 tonnes of rubber caught fire at a tyre-yard on Wisbech Road.

Police and firecrews are still advising local people to keep their windows and doors shut while the blaze burns out and a number of roads around the scene have been closed.

Two crews from Ely and a crew from Littleport were called to tackle the fire which started at around 3pm on Friday, with several more engines from Huntington, Sutton and Cambirdge called to help as the blaze gathered momentum. A police helicopter was also called to help survey the scene. Police have closed Wisbech Road.

The cause of the fire has not yet been identified.
