PEST controller Lloyd Smart used an infra red camera to discover what a householder thought might have been mice was actually a starling's nest in the roof.

Mr Smart of Fenland Environmental Services has now turned the footage caught by the camera into a video which shows the remarkable scenes in his customer's roof.

"The initial inspection for pests highlighted some old mouse activity and a largish gap under a fascia-line roof tile," said Mr Smart.

"Therefore a motion sensitive infra red camera was set in place to identify the pest- but it turned out not to be our rodent friends but a starling. Which by the way is a protected bird species in the UK".

Mr Smart says as a pest controller he often gets called out by customers worried about noises in their loft or attic which they believe to be rats or mice.

"The only way to diagnose the cause of noises is either physically to see the culprit or more often than not we have to rely on secondary evidence, i.e. rat or mouse droppings, signs of gnawing and chewing, signs of nesting or food storage for example"

Mr Smart, whose company operates across Cambridge, Ely, Huntingdon and the Fens, says the morale of his recent video is for people experiencing noises in their loft to not hesitate to get help.

"It may not be as bad as you are expecting," he said.
