AN open day at Ely Cathedral gave hundreds of visitors a unique insight into rarely seen parts of the 12th century landmark.
More than a thousand people turned out to enjoy the Cathedral's annual open evening last week which gives eager visitors the chance to ascend the daunting heights of the Octagon Tower, which spirals more than 100 feet off the ground.
As well as catching a glimpse of a spectacular panoramic of Ely and the surrounding area, visitors were also treated to tours of the Stained Glass Musuem and the Lady Chapel while having the opportunity to browse some of the dozens of craft stalls on display.
The evening was brought to a climax with a nod to the Cathedral's past with a candlelight compline in the Lady Chapel.
