A WOMAN died and five other p eople were injured, including two young children, after a four vehicle pile-up.

The crash involving three cars and a lorry happened on the A10 Lynn Road near Littleport on Friday night.

One car burst into flames after the impact and a quick-thinking lorry driver rushed to the rescue, pulling the driver free from the wreckage.

Then he fixed tow ropes to his lorry and pulled the burning car away from the other vehicles saving lives.

But the crash claimed the life of 59-year-old grandmother, Dawnne Shotter from London.

She was the front seat passenger in a Ford Escort car driven by her 61-year-old husband who is fighting for his life in hospital where his condition is described as "critical".

His rear seat passengers, the couple's two seven-year-old grandaughters, were also taken to hospital. One has life threatening injuries, but her condition is described as "stable", and the other suffered serious injuries but has since been discharged. All three of the injured came from London.

The driver of a Volkswagen Passat car involved in the crash, a 45-year-old man from Downham Market, Norfolk suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries and the 61-year-old driver of a Toyota car and his 60-year-old female passenger from Benfleet, Essex suffered slight injuries.

The 31-year-old lorry driver was unhurt in the crash which happened around 8pm.
