THERE were more traffic woes for motorists heading into Ely on the A142 this morning after a lorry smashed into the level crossing barriers.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called at about 8.30am to reports that the barriers had been pulled down by the lorry, with the crossing immediately closed to traffic.

Heavy goods vehicles queued in both directions while BTP officers and engineers from Network Rail worked to repair the damage.

First Capital Connect said that trains running from King’s Lynn to Kings Cross experienced minor delays while the work was carried out.

The barrier was cleared and traffic was flowing over the crossing again by 12.30pm.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesperson said:

“BTP attended the incident, which was reported at 8.31am, alongside officers from Cambridgeshire Police.

“Officers are currently reviewing CCTV and speaking to witnesses, and are appealing for anyone with information to contact police.”

Officers said that the driver of the lorry who smashed into the barriers left the scene.

Anyone with information should call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 107 of 28/09/2011.
