More than 800 colourful pompoms have been suspended from the ceiling of St Mary's Church, in Swaffham Bulbeck, as part of a new art installation.

The work was created by Mary Jane Montgomerie House who said she was inspired by a similar work on display at the home of pianist Gustav Holst, in Cheltenham.

A pompom has been made and hung to represent every person in the village – 840 in all. Each person was asked to choose one that represented them. Knitting groups, the local school and many volunteers helped prepare the display.

Visitors to the church are being encouraged to take a pompom away with them and place it in their own churches.

Mary Jane said: “From the outset it was my vision to bring together the school and villagers using St Mary’s Church as a community hub. There are approximately 840 pompoms which signify the population of Swaffham Bulbeck.

“Each pompom reflects a person through its size, colour, yarn composition and texture. The pompoms are used as nonverbal communicators which convey age, personality, feelings and emotions.

“If you are visiting Swaffham Bulbeck, please do pop in and see the display. You will find a basket of pompoms near the entrance of the church and a visitor’s book to sign or leave a message.”
