The University of the Third Age U3A held a birthday party at Needham Hall with some of its members.

The room was decked with bunting and balloons and proceedings were open by the Mayor Councillor Mike Rouse.

The Melody Brooker Quintet played a selection of well-known tunes while people were able to view pictures of some of the 54 groups available to join.

Guests enjoyed a buffet backed by music and the afternoon was rounded off by the Mayor and the chairman cutting the cake.

The group is part of a national movement for people who are no longer in full-time work, to continue enjoying learning and sharing knowledge.

The Ely and District U3A was formed in 2008. In 10 years it has grown to around 600 members and more than 50 active groups.

Some of the interest groups include table tennis, conversational French, botany, guitar, mah jong, bird watching, walking, German and book lovers.

The group also holds a regular series of talks and tours including the Normandy beaches and Coventry cathedral.
