Two Ely roads get Cambridgeshire County seal of approval
Two Ely roads have been adopted by Cambridgeshire County Council after work by local councillors with developers and residents to make sure they were brought up to scratch.
Alexander Chase and Meadow Way are part of new developments in the city and have been adopted as part of a process that ensures that roads are brought up to standard before the County Council can take them over.
This is to make sure tax payers are not faced with the cost to maintain substandard roads and streets.
Cambridgeshire County Councillor Anna Bailey, local member for Ely South and West, and East Cambridgeshire District Councillor Coralie Green, Ely South Ward, have been working together to get the roads adopted, and say that more roads are set to be adopted in the coming months.
Cllr Bailey said: “I would like to thank the developers Kier for sorting out the issues and the County Council working with us to get these roads adopted. Ely and indeed the whole of East Cambridgeshire is growing and it is important for residents that the new homes they are moving into are part of the Council’s network.
“But equally it is vital that developers do that work to make sure tax payers are not left footing the bill. We are still working hard to get Darwin Close and Collier Close adopted.”
Cllr Green said: “There were a few stumbling blocks that we had to get over to get these streets adopted. It was good that we, as councillors, could help remove those barriers and understand the issues from both ends. But what was also important was our local knowledge and I would also like to thank some residents who helped bring about some of the changes to allow the road to be adopted.
“Ely is a beautiful and historic city, attracting new residents and as well as providing homes for people already living in the area. It is vital if these new developments are going to feel like communities that the streets are adopted.”
