TRAINS between Ely and Downham Market are being cancelled on two Sundays this month, because the recent dry weather has led to the tracks becoming out of line with over had power cables.

Network Rail will carry out essential improvement works on Sunday November 20 and November 27, restoring tracks to their correct position.

A Network Rail spokesperson said: “We recognise that the timing of these closures is not ideal and we apologise for any disruption this may cause. It is absolutely essential that we carry out this work to keep the railway running efficiently and safely.”

Network Rails says the service closures are necessary because the ground on this stretch of track is drying out, owing to a lack of rainfall in the area. As a result of the dry weather, ground movement has caused the tracks to become out of direct alignment with the overhead lines used to power trains.

Services have been running at a reduced speed to minimise the chances of any disruption and remedial work has been carried out.

Although the ground has suffered through a lack of rain in recent months, heavy rainfall in November is beginning to redress the balance.

The work will take place between: 00:45 on 20th November 2011 to Monday 21st November 2011 at 03:50; and from

00:45 on Sunday 27th November 2011 to Monday 28th November 2011 at 03:50
