THE traditional General Election hustings took place in Haddenham late last week with spectators treated to the usual mix of promises, posturing and political theatre.

The event was held on Thursday (Apr 22) at the village's Baptist Church and saw an audience of around 100 eager voters handed their chance to grill the candidates standing for the South-East Cambridgeshire seat.

Though there was no overall 'winner' from the event, spectator and local councillor Bill Hunt thought there were two candidates who caught his eye,

"I thought that the Liberal Democrat candidate Jonathan Chatfield, and the Conservative candidate Jim Paice, were very professional and were really head and shoulders above the rest.

"I thought the other candidates did well and took the chance to let people know what they were about but I think the only two who could be taken seriously as our next MP were Mr Chatfield and Mr Paice."

Haddenham resident and district councillor Pauline Wilson, was also at the hustings, but took a different view of things,

"I thought the Green Party candidate was very informed and I liked a lot of what he had to say. I also liked the Lib Dem candidate because we know he lives locally and understands that issues that matter to local people."

Also answering questions on the night was independent candidate Geoffrey Wollard, Christian Peoples Alliance Daniel Bell, Labour candidate John Cowan and UKIP candidate Andy Monk.
