Five members of Ely's Outlaws Club will take up a gruelling challenge for charity on Friday when they spend seven days trekking in the Scottish Highlands.

Pete Willis, Leroy Brown, Glenn Moore, Stuart Birt and Claire Taylor will walk the 98-mile West Highland Way, sleeping only under canvas, to raise money for charity.

"I haven't done the walk before and it will be a challenge," Mr Birt, Outlaws club secretary, said.

"Myself and a couple of friends had been talking about it for a couple of years, and we went to the club and people there said they wanted to do it as well - we thought we might as well raise some money for charity while we were there."

The West Highland Way will take the group across old military roads and cattle tracks across the Highlands, and each of them will carry everything they need in their rucksacks.

Mr Birt said his pack weighs in at 17kg, adding that "after a few days, I'm sure it will feel like much more."

The group will return on Sunday, May 21, following a well-earned day off in Fort William. Mr Birt said the drive home would probably be the most exhausting challenge of the trip.

All of the sponsorship money raised will go to Macmillan Cancer Care in Cambridge, the Arthur Rank Hospice, Cambridge and The Chernobyl Children's Lifeline.
