THE £122,000 of taxpayers' money spent on resolving Ely's parking crisis has not been justified, according to an Ely Standard poll.

A website poll at www.ely-standard.co.uk has found that just under 60 per cent of our visitors think the money spent developing Ely's transport strategy has not been worth it.

The poll has reiterated criticism of the district council's expenditure on consultancy and surveys, as reported in the Standard.

The council's environment and transport committee gave the green light to a raft of proposals to solve Ely's parking woes earlier this month, and a new, 180-space car park is planned in autumn 2007, along with a new public transport interchange at the railway station.

But the move attracted criticism, notably from the Ely Traders' Association, for the length of time councillors took to arrive at a decision.

The district council has said the expenditure has been essential in informing the committee's decisions.
