THE excavation of an unused plot of land in Burwell has revealed ruins of a medieval windmill.
The land, which is adjacent to No.2 Isaacson Road in Burwell, was investigated following a planning application for development, but it has subsequently revealed evidence which has triggered a full excavation.
Upon removing the topsoil from larger areas of the site, the extent of the evidence suggested that this site was formerly the site of a windmill, dating back to medieval times.
Archaeologists are extremely excited at the findings, as there are few excavated examples of medieval windmills.
They believe that this particular windmill could be dated back to the 13th century or later.
Excavation has also revealed the previous existence of lime kilns at the site, and as little is known about how such kilns were made, archaeologists are extremely intrigued by the site.
The full excavation began in early March and is being carried out by the Cambridgeshire Archaeological Field Unit.
Once finished, a report will be published, compiling all of the evidence found at the site.
