The volunteer celebration event was held to recognise the hard work put into the community by unpaid and unsung heroes who help keep community events ticking along smoothly.

Mayor Councillor Liz Every said “So many people give up their time for free. A celebration evening is the perfect opportunity to let them know we appreciate and value what they do.

“Volunteering for Ely City Council is a great opportunity for young people as it can help them towards getting Duke of Edinburgh awards, UCAS points and showing a young person has extra qualities that employers may look for on CVs.

“We would love to welcome more volunteers and it would be fantastic to see more young faces,” she said.

Among the volunteers being thanked were those who help at the Christmas lights switch on, CCTV volunteers, In Bloom helpers, people who sit on the city centre forum, volunteers who open and close the cemetery gates and those on the youth forum.

The celebration evening was held at The Maltings.
