DETERMINED that Ely should look its best for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations, staff from the city's Tesco store took to the streets on Monday afternoon to pick up litter.

Around a dozen workers braved the sweltering heat to clean up Ely Park, Jubilee Gardens, and along the river front.

Store community champion Breda Walton explained: “This was done as part of a national campaign called Spring Clean for the Queen; a national newspaper had called on large companies to take part in a clean up event.

“Staff at the Ely Tesco store wanted the city to look magnificent for the celebrations; we picked up about six full bags of rubbish during our two hours of litter picking.

“We are very grateful to East Cambridgeshire District Council for lending us the grabbers, bag holders and gloves, they were really useful. Generally the standard of cleanliness in Ely is very good, but we just wanted to spruce it up for the Jubilee. It was very rewarding, and if it means that the public will enjoy the celebrations even more, then it was time really well spent.”
