TESCO has withdrawn its bid to move into the vacant Woolworths store on Ely Market Place, it was confirmed on Tuesday.
The news comes just a week after it emerged that both Tesco and high-street fashion chain M&Co, had announced plans to move into the store, causing widespread confusion among both shoppers and planners at East Cambridgeshire District Council (ECDC).
Following an approach to Tesco by planning officers earlier this week however, the supermarket giant, which is believed to own the store, opted to withdraw its application for a new Tesco Express outlet.
Though M&Co did not initially enter a formal planning application for use of the site, a spokesman for the council confirmed that the fashion-retailer had subsequently entered an application to alter the shop-frontage.
