TESCO has withdrawn plans to extend its Ely store at the eleventh hour.
A decision was due to be made by councillors today (Wednesday) on the 525 square metre extension, which was objected to by nearby companies, residents and council officers alike.
Planning experts said Tesco had failed to prove a need for more out-of-town shopping space - but the company insisted an extension would be only to its lobby area, to provide their customers with shelter from the elements.
A spokesperson for Tesco has yet to comment on why extension plans were withdrawn for a second time. A similar application was withdrawn last summer following speculation that Aldi was due to set up camp in the city.
