TWO teenage boys were seriously injured in a hit-and-run in Fordham.

It happened in Newmarket Road in the early hours of Saturday - a maroon Jeep Cherokee was found abandoned and burned out at Newmarket Racecourse.

A 15-year-old boy from Fordham and a 16-year-old boy from Bury St Edmunds were taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, where their conditions are described as "serious".

The incident happened at the junction with Market Street at about 1.40am and police have launched an appeal for witnesses.

Det Insp Chris Mead, from Cambridgeshire police, said: "We are trying to find out how this collision happened. I would urge anyone who witnessed it to come forward.

"I would particularly like to hear from anyone who saw the Jeep Cherokee in the Fordham, Soham or Newmarket areas in the early hours of Saturday morning."

A 31-year-old man from Newmarket has been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and failing to stop at the scene of a collision. He has been bailed to appear at Cambridge's Parkside Police Station on October 4.

A 23-year-old man from Soham has been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and bailed to appear at Parkside Police Station on August 29.
