A TEENAGER stuck two cans of Red Bull energy drink down his trousers before walking out of Tesco without paying for them.

Cornelius Smith did hand over cash at the checkout for one can of Tesco Kick energy drink - but failed to hand over the extra £2.72 needed to pay for the stolen drinks, even though he had another £2.90 in his pocket.

"He was about to go to Cambridge on the train and was thirsty," solicitor Michael Judkins told Ely magistrates.

"He chose to pay for one drink, but not the other two, he kept some money back for his train fare."

Smith, 18, of Saffron Piece, Sutton, admitted stealing the drinks from Tesco in Ely on January 7. He was given a 12-month conditional and told to pay £43 costs.

The teenager lives in a caravan, and has limited literacy, added Mr Judkins. "He is very sorry for what he has done, and realises he cannot go on behaving in this way.
