HADDENHAM cancer-fundraising hero Callum Brown's team of Jaffa Cakes walked for an astonishing 18 hours and raised more than £6,000 for charity in the process.
13-year-old Callum, a pupil at Witchford Village College, was diagnosed with a brain tumour earlier this year, and was determined to take part in Cancer Research Relay for Life on Saturday.
He started with a celebratory Cancer Survivors' lap in the grounds of Lodge Farm in south Cambridgeshire, proudly sporting his orange team Jaffa Cake T shirt and a cap to shield him from the sun. Before Callum started chemotherapy, he had a shock of ginger hair and now describes himself as "orange on the inside" - hence the name Jaffa Cake.
He was joined by a team of 36 friends and family members who took it in turns to walk for 18 hours, ending at 9am on Sunday morning.
The £6,000 total was certainly a team effort, helped by stepbrother Jack, who ran a hook a duck stall on the day, and uncle Derek who held a music quiz. Even Callum's Scout leaders from Haddenham took a turn round the farm.
As a result, the team won the prize for most money raised - and immediately donated their prize - a huge fruit cake - to cancer patients at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge.
After the relay, Callum's mum Sally, said everyone was delighted to have beaten Callum's target of £5,000. "We walked all night - everybody was stiff sore and tired, but Callum's gone off to school pleased with himself - it's given him a boost," she said.
