An afternoon ‘tea at the Ritz’ at an Ely church raised £1,000 for seriously ill Ugandan children.

The charity event was held on Saturday at St Mary’s Church and welcomed 80 people for an afternoon tea and cakes in aid of Potter’s Village, Uganda.

The village is a child crisis and medical centre, based in Kisoro, which cares for abandoned and orphaned babies with the aim of ‘restoring hope to helpless children’.

The Rev Chris Hill, who helped organise the event, said: “About seven or eight children are currently in the wards there. They are all very poorly and their mums have either died during childbirth or may have aids.”

St Mary’s chose to raise money for Potter’s Village because one of their couples, Mike and Sue Hughes, a doctor and administrator, now lead the hospital along with a staff team of 20–30 people.

As well as an afternoon tea, live music came from David Brownlow and Japanese pianist Ryoko.

Rev Hill said: “The village is doing really amazing work.”
