A group which encourages people to discuss mental health in a passionate support network is celebrating a year since its launch in Ely.

It is holding its fifth event at the cathedral conference centre with a chance to try Tai Chi and listen to experts.

Talking FreELY held its first event held at Ely Cathedral 12 months ago with more than 60 people and since then has hosted five events, with one attracting more than 200.

Organisers say it is a “passionate group” that aims to open up the discussion on mental health without stigma.

The fifth event is set to be another success with guest talks from a dietitian, an adviser at the Richmond Fellowship and a trainee youth minister and a chance to try Tai Chi for free.

Dietician Dalia Maor works in private practice in Cambridge and uses food as medicine.

Val Antell, an employment adviser at the Richmond Fellowship, will talk about the work of the fellowship, a national mental health charity, which provides housing, community and employment services.

Alice Lily will talk about schizophrenia, vulnerability and the power of community. She is a trainee youth minister, bookseller and studies theology at Ridley Hall, University of Cambridge.

Alice runs a blog called Project Joy and is currently setting up t-shirt workshops, as a way to promote the message that no matter who we are our stories matter.

• Talking FreEly is on Saturday July 7 from 9.30am to 1pm at the cathedral conference centre. Throughout the morning volunteers will be around for a chat in the pop-up cafe. Come along for a free cup of tea and slice of birthday cake.
