PEOPLE living in East Cambridgeshire could soon have their rubbish collected fortnightly. Fortnightly rubbish collection is currently being trialled in Witchford and Bottisham and the district council will decide whether to implement the measure across the whole of East Cambridgeshire permanently.

Reporter ADAM LAZZARI went out to see what

people think.

Jamie Knowles, 53, from Pymoor.

"It's a bad idea. There is already a rat problem in Pymoor, and having fortnightly collections would encourage this. If you miss a week or go on holiday, you would have to wait a month to have your rubbish collected."

Malgomata Lee, 28, from Witchford.

"We already pay enough Council Tax, so our rubbish should be collected every week. It's a very bad idea. I'm not too worried about rats or anything like that because I have a cat to scare them away."

Ben Gibbs, 38, from Ely.

"I'm all for encouraging recycling, but I really disagree with the plans. We should all have our rubbish collected every week and we should have wheelie bins. Our Council Tax will keep going up. I think this is just a cost-cutting exercise and the encouragement to recycle and cut waste is extremely tenuous."

Peter Hillman, 64, from Ely.

"It won't really affect me because I recycle so much already. I only have half a bag of rubbish every week, so usually only have a bag collected every fortnight anyway.

"I know lots of people who won't be happy about it and I can see their point of view, as it must be a struggle to store rubbish if you live in terraced housing.

"This might encourage people to recycle more and cut waste, but there needs to be more facilities for this available."

Paul Quant, 62, from Little Downham

"I think fortnightly collection is a great idea.

"We recycle about 60 per cent of our rubbish anyway, and this should encourage more people to do the same. We only have half a bag full of rubbish a week anyway.

"People don't initially like change, but when they see that it works, many people will be okay with it.

"It will save money and hopefully Council Tax won't increase at such a rate."

Virginia Divall, from Witchford.

"We have been having our rubbish collected fortnightly for 18 months to two years, and I really don't like it. As a family you generate a lot of rubbish, and if you go on holiday you end up storing it for a month. In the hot weather it smells really awful, and it can bring an increase in rats.

"It would make a lot more sense if we had wheelie bins. That way the rubbish would be contained, and nothing can get at it. Then people might recycle.

"This is definitely just a cost-cutting exercise, but there will be no difference to Council Tax. The money saved on this should go towards getting us wheelie bins.
