A community market inside a heritage building enjoyed a Christmas spectacular to round off the year before opening again in February.

The market, which has fast become a popular date on the Littleport calendar, enjoys the backdrop of the historic Adams heritage centre and opens again on Saturday February 6.

Tracey Harding, Ely’s tourism and town centre manager, said: “The market is like taking a step back in time, the produce and stalls look amazing inside the building and it has really taken off as a meeting point.

“There is a great mix of regular and guest stalls and a wide variety of local produce.

“The market launched in September and within three months has become a lovely community attraction, traders like being in the warm and it is a great place for customers to browse.

“It is a real privilege to be inside such a beautiful historic building.”

Following overwhelming support in a local survey the Adams Community Market launched on September 26.

The heritage centre hosts a series of displays about Littleport’s history, and the shop is like a time capsule with many old ledgers, and items that were once for sale in the ironmongers shop, which was run by the Adams family for more than 100 years.

JH Adams and Sons closed its doors in 2010 and not long after it shut, the Family Adams Project was launched to catalogue, record and archive the history of the premises and its owners.

The landmark premises were donated by local benefactor, Peter Audus, who has also carried out major renovations to its interior.

The renovations revealed all the original fixtures and fittings in all their timeless glory, including the Victorian mahogany counter, shelves and a beautiful staircase.

The community market is held in the centre from 9am to 1pm every Saturday and is a joint initiative between Littleport Town Team and Adams Heritage Centre.

It is on the first and third Saturday of each month.
