Intrepid staff at Ely’s Paradise Pool are embarking on a 24-hour swimming challenge in aid of Aspire, the spinal injuries charity,

During the 24 hour challenge, which takes place on November 1, the team of 24 staff will be swimming the equivalent distance of the English Channel twice – which equates to 2,832 lengths of the pool.

Matthew Lardner, a duty manager at Paradise Pools, has been instrumental in pulling the team together to take part in the challenge.

He said: “Every eight hours someone is paralysed by spinal cord injury. It can happen to anyone at any time, and there is currently no cure.

“Every pound that we raise means that Aspire can provide practical help to a spinal injured person, allowing them to live a more independent life.

“The team is committed to raising as much money as we can by going the extra mile in our challenge and aiming to complete it in just a day.”
