IN the face of the challenges to worldwide food supplies posed by climate change, diminishing oil, gas and water supplies, we need to rethink the way we will feed ourselves in the future.

Transition Ely, the sustainable resources group, held a local food conference at Ely Methodist Church Hall on Saturday to discuss ways of doing this. The conference aimed to bring together people who are concerned about access to locally produced, sustainable food supplies, and who want to explore issues and develop responses. Speakers included Ben Reynolds, network director of Sustain, Mikey Thomas, a food researcher and Ken Kelso from Fen End Farm and the main messages to delegates were: grow local, buy local and eat local. The conference was opened by James Paice MP for South East Cambridgeshire.
