ST George's Medical Centre in Littleport is one of the first GP surgeries in the area being upgraded to perform minor operations.
The Parsons Lane facility is refurbishing three rooms where day case surgery such as cataracts, cystoscopies, carpel tunnels, and other ear, nose and throat (ENT), orthopaedics and urological conditions will be treated. This means people will no longer have to travel to the major hospitals in the area for treatment.
Two of the rooms being upgraded at the practice will be used as consulting rooms and one will become a new minor operations suite. Sponsors are being sought for each of the rooms although the general cost of refurbishment is being met from the Medical Centre's funds.
The remodelling work is underway and the operations suite is expected to open in about three weeks' time.
