LAST October, Christine Gascoigne, President-elect of Ely Hereward Rotary Club did a sponsored walk along the north Norfolk coast, in aid of a nursery school in the Gambia.

Three weeks ago, she had the opportunity to go to the Gambia to see for herself how the money had been spent, taking with her pencils, erasers and pencil sharpeners kindly donated by Tindalls of Ely.

She spent two days at the school, looking at the buildings, talking to the teachers and sitting in on some of the classes.

She was delighted to see that the money she had raised had already been spent and that the classroom was finished and occupied by about 50 children who were learning English and maths, as well as something about the Gambia’s history and environment.

What’s more, there was enough money left over to buy bricks for a fourth classroom, which is now being built and which will be ready for the next school year. The pencils and other stationery from Tindalls were very welcome since the school is very short of materials, and they were soon in use.

The club hopes to continue its support for the school by sending stationery and books on a regular basis.
