People living in Stretham have the longest commute to work according to a new study commissioned by Royal Mail.
The study looks at the postcode districts in the Cambridge area to find out how far people travel to and from work
Stretham CB6, residents have the longest commute travelling on average 13.5 miles (21.8km) each way while those in north Cambridge CB4, enjoy the shortest journeys at an average of 6.8 miles (11km).
Cycling is the most popular method of travel with 31% of North Cambridge CB4 commuters most likely to start the day this way.
More than a quarter (20.2%) of workers from west Cambridge CB2 take the bus to work, while 10.1% from the Clavering CB11 choose the train
Centre for Economic and Business Research (Cebr) conducted analysis of a number of data sources including the 2011 census, commuter flows data from the annual population survey and information released from the Office for National Statistics to reveal the findings.
Steve Rooney, head of the address management unit which looks after Royal Mail’s address databases, including the postcode address file, said: “According to the 2011 Census over 11.2 million people travel from one local authority to another to get to work that means that 17% of the UK population are moving around the country at the same time every day. This study gives us a fascinating glimpse into what these journeys look like.”
