STAFF at Costa Coffee in Ely took part in a sponsored bike ride in memory of teenager Sarah Oldham who died in a car crash on January 12.

With Sarah's father, Mike, and brother, Matthew, seeing them off, Costa managers Nick Mackenzie and Ash Miller set out from the coffee shop on Market Street where Sarah worked part-time, on a 12-mile ride to the family's home in The Row, Sutton.

The pair have so far managed to raise more than £1000 in sponsorship for the ride, which will be donated to the NCCU ward at Addenbrooke's Hospital where Sarah, 17, was treated after the crash.

Mr Mackenzie said. "I am honoured to be doing this, and we have had a great response from the public and everyone has been wishing us good luck.

"We would also like to thank City Cycle Centre for helping us do this ride as they kindly volunteered to build us our bikes especially for the event."

Sarah lost her life after the Citroen Saxo car she was travelling in crashed into an electricity pylon on the A142 just outside Mepal.

A close friend of Sarah's has also organised a sponsored parachute jump in order to raise money for the ward where Sarah was treated.

Harriet Goodfellow, 17, from Sutton, was a school friend of Sarah's and is all set to travel to Chatteris Airfield on March 29 to jump 10'000ft from an aeroplane.

Harriet's mother Lucy, said "I'm so very proud of her for deciding to do this, she felt that she to do something for Sarah and the NCCU ward and this was the best way to do it."

INFO: Anybody wishing to sponsor Harriet can contact Mrs Goodfellow on 07745203916 or 01353 699460. Alternatively you can drop into Simon Taylor Hair Salon on Fore Hill where Sarah works.

* A variety concert is also being held to raise funds for the NCCU ward at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, turn to Page 21 for details.
