An increase in the theft of tools and equipment from vans in Ely has prompted police to issue a warning to vehicle owners.

Officers are warning people who leave tools in their vans overnight to ensure their vehicles left out of sight or the equipment to be removed.

PCSO Matt Chennell, said: “In Ely, we have recently seen an increase of offences involving theft of power tools and equipment from lock and secured vehicles.

“We have increased our night time patrols, however, we urge all van owners to ensure their vans are kept out of sight as best as possible, and to remove any tools and equipment from the vehicle to reduce the risk of theft.”

PCSO Chennell added that a small number of van stickers bearing the message ‘No tools left in this vehicle’ were available from Ely station to collect.

He added: “If you own a van, please feel free to collect one free of charge from us during opening times. Remember, if you see anyone or any vehicles acting suspiciously around your street, please call the police.”
