THE lone soldier atop Soham’s war memorial stands proud once more after undergoing a thorough clean.

Residents had been pressing for some time to get the monument, in Red Lion Square, restored to its full glory and funding provided from Soham Town Council and the late Eric Day ensured that work finally began last Monday.

Jeremy Reader, of Soham firm JK Memorials, took on the task and had the soldier clean and the various plaques, listing names of dozens of servicemen killed across two world wars, given a clean bill of health within the week.

He said: “I used a pressure washer with a few cleaning agents but it was more elbow grease than anything else to be honest.

“All in all I am very happy with the job and grateful for all the support I have received from people in the tow.”
