Young musical talent celebrated in Soham

Young people took part in a college championships to celebrate musical talent.

The Soham Village College young musician of the year final saw a wide range of music performed.

A spokesman for the college said: “This year was once again a wonderful evening of incredible musicianship and talent!.

“The PAC auditorium was packed and the audience were treated to an extravaganza of solo performances, with the usual eclectic mix of performances including jazz saxophone, Jimi Hendrix, songs from musicals and so much more.

“Whilst the guest adjudicator, Matthew Rudd, made some very difficult decisions the audience enjoyed performances from two choirs, Colla Voce SVC choir led by Allyson Dobie-Oxley and Ely St Mary’s Primary School Choirled by Hazel Law.”

The results were:

Primary Key Stage 2:

First place – Sean Trelford, electric guitar, Ely St. Mary’s.

Second place – Sophie Sadler, piano, from The Weatheralls.

Third place - Perry, vocal, from St Andrew’s.

SVC Key Stage 3:

Young Voice of the Year – Ruth Taylor (yr 9)

Runner Up Voice – Zak Potts (yr 9)

Young Instrumentalist of the year – Lauren Peck (saxophone) yr 8

Runner Up Instrumentalist – George Emms (piano) yr 7

SVC Key Stage 4:

Young Voice of the Year – Sapphire Locke (yr 11)

Runner Up Voice – Phyllida Hickish (yr 11)

Young Instrumentalist of the Year – Tom Kay (drums) yr 10

Overall winner

Jake Stearne (voice) yr 11

• The Stephen Kenna Award for Commitment and Dedication to Music – Katie Kirkpatrick (yr 11).
