A youth member of the Soham branch of the Royal British Legion is celebrating after finishing fifth in the National Youth Standard Bearers competition.

Morwenna Woodbridge achieved a top finish in Manchester-based competition after impressing with her bearing skills.

The 15-year-old, who is the standard bearer for Cambridgeshire and the East Midlands region, has only been learning how to carry for the standard for a year and had to carry out a number of difficult drills at the competition on April 9.

Those drills included carrying the standard at a pace of 116 steps per minute, showing the dip for the Royal Salute and for the act of homage, which involves keeping the pole in line with the right foot.

Glenn Woodbridge, chairman of the Soham branch of the Royal British Legion, said: “We are very proud of Morwenna for the hard work and dedication that she has shown in learning so much in such a short time.

“We are grateful for the help and dedication from all those at the standard bearer school for without them this would not have been possible.”
