ELY Ladies 2nd team were left frustrated after they were held to a 0-0 draw by an organised Newmarket side.

In a bruising game for both sides, Ely found openings hard to come-by and were ultimately unable to find a telling breakthrough.

From the outset of the game Ely were made to work hard to retain possession as Newmarket were quick to close down, but the home side did find some joy via Jess Haws and Louise Person who used their pace well to get down the flanks.

The best chances of the half fell Ely's way as persistent attacking play in the Newmarket area was rewarded with a couple of penalty corners. City were unable to make them pay though, and the scores remained at 0-0.

The pattern of play after the break was similar to that of the first-half as Ely pressed forward, but they were frustrated by robust and effective defending by the visiting team.

Far from having things all their own way however, the home defence was tested to a far greater degree in the second-period as Newmarket forged forward in search of a breakthrough of their own. However they too were held up by sturdy defending.

The chance of the game came in the dying stages when Nan Armer broke free of the defence to find herself clean through. With the goal at her mercy however, Armer slid her shot agonisingly wide.

The draw sees Ely remain in fifth place in Division Two of the Cambs Ladies League.
