CUSTOMERS at Waitrose in Ely are being asked to vote for their favourite charity in the supermarket's bid to give away £1,000 every month.

It is all part of the store's Community Matters scheme. Each month, participating branches will donate £1,000 to three local charities. The three charities are nominated by customers and each time a customer shops at the store they receive a token which they use to vote for their preferred charity.

The £1,000 is then split according to how many votes each charity has received.

Ely manager Jo Smith announced October's nominated charities last week. They are Branching Out, Ely Lions - who are currently fund-raising for the Christmas lights in Ely- and the Ely branch of Citizen's Advice.

She said: "Customers still have until October 25 to vote for this month's charities.

"The Community Matters scheme is absolutely superb. We have been inundated with entries from local people and it is up to our staff to decide which three charities go forward each month.

"Anyone can nominate a charity and it is such a simple way to raise money for a project you care about."
