A SHOP worker was robbed in broad daylight as she carried thousands of pounds worth of weekend takings to the bank in carrier bags.

The woman was pushed over by a hooded raider just after leaving the One Stop shop in Littleport's Wisbech Road.

She suffered a minor injury to her back and was helped by a woman passer-by who rushed to her aid. The robbery happened at around 10.25am on Monday as the shop worker was walking along Church Lane.

As she approached the traffic lights at the junction of Crown Lane and Main Street, a silver saloon car pulled up and a man wearing a balaclava, dark clothing and gloves got out.

He pushed the victim over, grabbed the cash, which was in carrier bags, and made off in the car which was being driven by a man with a beard.

The robbery comes just weeks after the publican of the Crown Inn at Littleport was robbed as he carried a bag of takings to the bank.

Police are not linking the raids at this stage but have not discounted the fact that they could be connected.

Pc Dan Botterill, from Ely Police Station, said: "I am appealing for anyone who was in the area at about the time this robbery took place to consider whether they saw anything that could help this investigation.

"I would particularly like to speak to the woman who came to the victim's aid or anyone who thinks they may have seen the silver saloon car involved."
