A Littleport slimming consultant is calling for women to join her at one of the region's biggest charity walks later this year.

Sharon Heaps, who leads Slimming World groups in Littleport and Swaffham Prior, is asking for members to join her at Girls Night Out, a sponsored event where women wear pyjamas and flashing bunny ears to walk 11.2 or six miles at night.

It will not be the first year Sharon has taken part as she took a 50-strong contingent of Slimming World members – with the team name ‘Sharon’s Superstars’ – along to Girls Night Out last year. This year, she is hoping to have 70 members on the team.

She said: “Last year the support throughout was amazing.

“For me, seeing a sea of pink flashing bunny ears at the start was brilliant, while the cheers of support as you walk around and the support from the residents of Bury – wow.

“You have people waiting outside their houses with cups of tea and biscuits for walkers.

“Then just when you think it’s getting tough the road takes you around the hospice and you have got patients up at the window waving at you.

“It makes you think that your feet might hurt for 24 hours after the walk, but at least you can walk it.”

The annual Girls Night Out walk, in aid of St Nicholas Hospice Care, takes place in Bury St Edmunds on September 10.

Jenny Baskett, St Nicholas Hospice Care events and challenges fundraiser, added: “Girls Night Out is like a giant hen party.

“We had 1,800 women last year and the event raised £190,000.

“We use that money to look after people with long-term and life-threatening illnesses and their families.

“We know the work we do at the hospice makes a huge difference and we couldn’t do it without people taking part in events like Girls Night Out.

“Every mile that is walked raises money for the hospice and every mile that is walked helps someone who isn’t well enough to walk themselves.”

Registration for Girls Night Out costs £10 before May 31 (£15 after), including a t-shirt and flashing bunny ears.
