VOTERS from East Cambridgeshire are to be joined with Newmarket in a planned shakeup of parliamentary constituencies proposed in a new report.
The Boundary Commission carried out a nationwide review in its bid to reduce the number of constituencies in England from 533 to 502.
As part of the new report, the commission has recommended that East Cambridgeshire will once again become one constituency, with Newmarket also joined on.
The towns of Sutton, Littleport and Mepal, which currently come under North East Cambridgeshire, will also form part of the new constituency,
The report said: “Although this creates a cross-county constituency, the town of
Newmarket has strong communication links with Ely and the rest of the proposed
constituency.”
Conservative MP for North East Cambridgeshire, Stephen Barclay, is set to loose out in the proposed shakeup however, as his constituency would be divided between Peterborough South and a new cross-border Wisbech and Downham Market Constituency.
The public are being given the chance to have a say on the proposals on the Boundary Commission’s website, www.boundarycommissionforengland.independent.gov.uk, before final recommendations are made in 2013.
