Two fire crews from Cambridge, one from Burwell and a rescue vehicle arrived on the scene at around 9pm. Firefighters used specialist cutting equipment to release the casualty, who was then left in the care of the ambulance service.

Wayne Swales, station commander and officer in charge of the incident, said: “Two very large vehicles were in collision and the casualty was very severely trapped.

“We worked very hard with paramedics from the air ambulance and HART team to carry out an extremely difficult extrication.

“One of the lorries was carrying parcels and was incredibly unstable following the collision, which meant crews had to stabilise it using specialist equipment, as well as contend with rescuing the casualty.
